What Do I Need To Acquire A Work Permit?

Date: 2022-06-01

Acquiring a work permit as a foreign national in Ghana comes with a little stress as it involves a lot of paperwork and documentation procedures, however, it is a responsive process all things being equal.

For safety and security reasons, no Immigration officer will issue permits without having access to the right documents for processing, which is the same in other countries where Ghana has no exemption.

However, for one to be issued a work permit, he/she must follow through some procedures and processes before finally getting access to it.

A work permit is a  work approval document issued by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for the employment of foreign nationals, indicating the number and full details of persons authorised to be employed in an Institution.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) under the auspices of the Ministry of Interior liaise with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to conduct such exercise.

A Ghana work permit is usually valid for 1 year and in some special cases 6 months. The work permit clearly indicates the name of the employer and a statement indicating that the holder is only permitted to engage in the particular employment, business or professional occupation specified only in the work permit.

Established by Immigration Service Act, 2016, Act 908, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) serves as the principal source for all immigration services including visa entry, residence and employment of foreign nationals in Ghana, in accordance with the Immigration law.

However, the requirements for work permit are;

1. Application letter from Applicant or organisation engaging the applicant on the company’s letterhead

2. CV/Educational Certificates

3. Marriage Certificate (in case applicant is married to a Ghanaian)

4. Letter of support from spouse (Ghanaian) if applicable

5. Company registration/objects of company that intends to employ the applicant

6. Certificate of commencement of business

7. If working for a Government Establishment, a letter of support from the appropriate establishment

8. Audited accounts of companies intended to offer the person employment.

9. Tax clearance certificate

10. Letter of appointment

11. Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Certificate (If registered)

12. Non-Citizen ID card – To be done at the NIA Office in Accra

13. Medical Report – To be done at the Ghana Immigration Service, Accra

Work Permit Application Completion Forms;

Work permit application forms are accessible  free of charge at the Ghana Immigration Service Office in Accra. The form requires these three basic  information; Company, Employee and Employment contract details.

Pertinent and accurate information must be provided in all sections to enable the Ghana Immigration Service to effectively assess the application on its own merits and take appropriate decisions.

The application forms must be signed by an authorised representative of the employer. The person who signs the application must attach relevant documents as proof that he/she is an officer of the company, such as passport, a copy of residence permit, or any other relevant official documents etc.

In conclusion, it is important to note that a work permit is required for employees under the age of 18. The purpose of this permit is to provide a legal document detailing employment and residence information, which can be used by authorities in case of an emergency.
